2009 Cricket World Cup Odds
After the successful inaugural Twenty20 World Cup in South Africa in 2007, the ICC made the decision to hold
the event every two years, and selected England as the host for the 2009 Twenty20 World Cup. The 2009 edition
of the tournament will not have many changes to the format used in 2007, with the exception of changes to tie
breaker rules.
The men’s tournament starts at Lord’s on Friday 5 June, with an opening ceremony and the first match, between
the hosts and one of two Associate teams taking part.
The tournament is a short, sharp event and includes 14 double-headers, three of them (the semi-finals and final)
involving men’s and women’s matches.
The men’s tournament, which will be staged at three venues – Lord’s, The Oval and Trent Bridge.
Both semi-finals, at Trent Bridge on 18 June and The Oval on 19 June and the final at Lord’s on
Sunday 21 June, will feature double-headers with women’s and men’s matches
Placement for the Super Eight stage is determined as follows:
The first two teams in each group are placed 1 or 2. They will retain this position for the Super Eight stage,
irrespective of whether they finish first or second in their group, unless they are knocked out by the team 3
in their group. In this instance, team 3 replaces the position of the team they knock out.
For example, if Sri Lanka wins Group C and Australia are second, for the purposes of the Super Eights;
Australia will still remain C1 and Sri Lanka C2. If West Indies, for example, qualifies instead of Australia
they will become C1.
This formula provides spectators with certainty as to the location of team matches.
The holder of the ICC World Twenty20 trophy is India, which beat Pakistan by five runs in Johannesburg in
September 2007, the culmination of a thrilling inaugural tournament.
